Welcome to the All-Electric House
The greatest labour saver ever invented! When electricity was first supplied to households on a commercial basis, its main application was for lighting. Before long, inventors and manufacturers were finding ways to put the new silent servant to work around the house, with appliances such as vacuum cleaners and washing machines. Although early models offered fewer technological features than the machines we use today, they helped take the drudgery out of chores that had been done exclusively by hand for thousands of years. Appliances were expensive; each one represented a significant investment, so manufacturers went to great lengths to persuade potential customers that such new-fangled inventions were actually useful things to own. Reassuringly, the better quality machines were often built to last a lifetime, and even today there are vacuum cleaners from the 1930s that can out-vacuum a modern machine.
