The cupboard under the stairs
The earliest vacuum cleaner in our collection: A 'Tellus' model M20 from the 1920s, actually made by Nilfisk. This cleaner had been in use for nearly sixty years when a winding fault in the motor brought it to a halt, after which it had languished in the cupboard under somebody's stairs for a few more years! Luckily we were able to repair the winding by 'microsurgery', reconnecting a fractured wire buried deep in one of the armature coils. We no longer use it to clean the floor but it does get demonstrated whenever we can find someone on whom to try the traditional vacuum-cleaner-salesman’s patter.
