NEW enquiries

Postby brownearth » Sun Feb 12, 2012 12:34 am

Hi

I've just signed up to this forum for advice really. Been looking to offload some items of my Dad whose no longer alive. He was an electronics professional and had a collection of electronic equipment dating back to the 1940's, particularly vintage ammeters, voltmeters, universal avo meter and including what look like a couple of home made voltmeters plus an oscilloscope, some resistors and other similar but unidentified objects.

Was wondering whether they might be of any interest to anyone here. I tried putting some of the meters on ebay but met with no response. To be honest I'm not worried about the money, it would be nice not to throw them away but instead find a good home for them.

Thanks
Rupert

Hi Rupert

Thanks for posting about these - would it be possible for you to upload a few pics to give us some pointers - perhaps we can put names to some of the unidentified objects too. Here at EK we have a very good selection of test meters already but they can almost certainly be found welcoming homes. Stocks of vintage components such as resistors would be useful for kitting out our mock-up of a service department though.

Look forward to seeing / hearing more.

Thanks
Lucien

Hi Rupert

P1180064.jpg The gearmotor could have been for anything from a test-tube shaker to an illuminated sign speller. It has been repurposed for another unknown function. I don't recognise the maker of the motor.

Meter.jpg Looks like a home-made signal generator for testing and aligning radios. It's difficult to read the scale markings but they seem to include the AM broadcast band. A unit like this, if well constructed, could have proved a perfectly good alternative to a commercially made one.

HM Voltmeter.jpg Probably a home-made valve tester. It has approximately the right assortment of controls although a rather large number of wander sockets and pillar terminals - perhaps the panel was adapted from something else. Unusual to have only equipped it with B5 & B7 valveholders, no Octal etc so I am beginning to wonder. Nonetheless it is an interesting-looking device.

P1180055.jpg Is this heavy? If so it could be an isolating or step-down transformer.

Universal AVOmeter.jpg This is a Model 7, Mk1.

The panel meters are all popular types, I might know of a use for the 1mA and 25mA Ferranti meters as they have the right style cases to replace a couple of missing / damaged ones on some pre-war amplifiers.

I would say that the Avo 7 and possibly the scope are saleable, the remainder and other items like them would be of interest to radio people if offered FOC. You might do well to post about them on the Vintage Radio Forum - it's a huge, busy forum with lots of enthusiasts. http://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/

The valve tester (?) continues to intrigue me with its two-of-each type of socket though!

Hi Lucien

Thanks for that information. Of course you are welcome to have the 2 panel meters that you mentioned though whether it is convenient to collect I don't know, are you close to Surrey/London area? Otherwise would mean posting which is not going to be cheap. I offered the various items on Vintage Radio site so waiting to see what response I get there too. Yes what could be a transformer is quite heavy about 10kg I'd say.

Thanks
Rupert
